Natural Approach to Prostate Cancer

Terry likes to tell people that healing is a family tradition; his grandfather was the village healer in his homeland of Holland. Terry puts a uniquely Canadian twist on his healer moniker, as a Registered Herbalist and a Naturopathic Doctor. He has a practice in Barry's Bay, Ontario. After 7 years of practice as a naturopathic doctor in Sarnia and London, Ontario, Terry moved in 2001 with his family to the beautiful upper Ottawa valley to join St. Francis Herb Farm as their director of research and development. As a board-certified naturopathic doctor since 1994, his is a general family practice with an emphasis on cancer treatment. At SFHF, he conducts new product formulation and development, manages regulatory affairs, and provides medical expertise. In addition to new products, Terry also helps with design of new processes to aid in novel format creation like syrups, gummies, and capsules.

Terry manages several research collaborations for SF including partnerships with the uOttawa’s Biopharmaceuticals program (collaborative grant received from the Ontario Centres for Innovation), the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program, Lambton College’s ‘Canadian Bio-Cleantech Applied Research Network’ (with grants from Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Chair for Colleges). Past collaborations have included, among others, an NSERC – Engage program funded collaboration with the University of Alberta, an NSERC Collaborative Research and Development Grant with the uOttawa, and an AgriInnovate - Canadian Agricultural Partnership. Terry has been a guest speaker at various venues including several CHFA trade shows, at the BRB CE Group Continuing Education Conference for Ontario Naturopathic Doctors, the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors OANDCon annual conferences, the Heartwood Gathering, the University of Ottawa, the Canadian Herbal Conference, and the University of Western Ontario, among others.

Terry has coauthored scientific journal papers and book chapters, including a chapter, Extraction Technologies for Plant-derived Nutraceuticals and Natural Health Products, co-authored with professors in the Biopharmaceuticals department at uOttawa, Drs. Cory Harris, PhD, and John Thor Arnason, PhD. The chapter appears in the book, Nutraceuticals and Human Health: The Food-to-supplement Paradigm. In collaboration with University of British Columbia’s Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, Terry coauthored "Prevention of Prostate Tumor Development by Stimulation of Antitumor Immunity Using a Standardized Herbal Extract (Deep Immune®) in TRAMP Mice", and presented the findings as a poster presentation at OncANP 2019 in San Diego. He is also a Peer Review Board member of the Canadian Journal of Naturopathic Medicine and a Referee for the same. Terry has been a past contributor to the Integrated Healthcare Practitioner magazine and to the Alive Magazine and its sister publication, Sage. Terry also sat on the Natural Health Product Regulatory Advisory Council for the Canadian Health Food Association.

Terry endeavours to spread the word that natural medicine and herbalism is a viable option for life’s ills.
